Every new non-profit reaches an age at which the founders realize they require more hands, more advice and more direction. That’s when many put together an executive board. There are many different boards that are not the same. In reality, there’s a wide spectrum of governance models that can be employed to ensure your charitable organization is running properly and serves its stated goals.
One of the most well-known governance models for nonprofits is an advisory model. This allows the executive director to talk with a panel of advisors regularly for guidance on how to run a nonprofit. The governing board may be different or the same than the advisory board, based on the conditions agreed on. Another common model is the model of cooperative governance. It is a highly democratic structure that distributes the power equally amongst all board members. It works best for organizations who are not legally required to have the chief executive officer.
The Policy Board Model has also gained a lot of attention. Developed by John Carver, this governance model is a great tool for developing guidelines that management and board must abide by.
All of these models are great however, they might not be appropriate for your particular nonprofit. It is common for nonprofits to have a central governance model, to which they will add additional models in order to meet their unique needs. This makes for a powerful combination of systems that can help your organization grow and reach its goals.
